BLACK 3 FOLD SARTORIAL CLASSIC SILK TIE
Description
Woven in Como from high-density jacquard silk (around 112 picks per centimetre), with a compact hand and understated sheen. The solid black surface carries a quiet depth - absorbing light rather than reflecting it, for a finish that reads as both formal and effortless. Cut by hand on the true bias, then assembled as a classic 3-fold. The slip stitch, bar tack and closing are finished by hand.

Learn more: What is a 3-fold tie
Why choose a sartorial construction over a standard lined tie?
A sartorial tie — whether 3-fold or 7-fold — relies on the silk itself for body. This produces a more natural drape, a softer knot, and a tie that ages better. Lined ties hold their shape through stiffening, not through material quality.
What blade width does this tie have?
The blade measures approximately 8 cm — the standard Italian proportion that pairs correctly with classic lapels of 8 to 9 cm. This is neither a fashion-forward narrow tie nor an oversized vintage width.
How should I store a 3-fold tie?
Roll it loosely from the narrow end after wearing. Never fold or hang a tie — folding creates permanent creases, and hanging stretches the silk. Rolling allows the fibres to recover their shape naturally overnight.
What is the slip stitch and why does it matter?
The slip stitch is a single thread running the length of the tie's back seam. It allows the tie to stretch slightly under tension and return to shape, preventing permanent deformation from knotting. Its presence is a hallmark of handcraft.
Care
This piece is crafted from pure silk or silk satin and finished by hand. To preserve its drape, lustre and shape over time:
- Dry clean only is recommended
- Avoid machine washing or soaking in water
- Do not bleach
- Do not tumble dry
- If needed, steam gently or iron on very low heat on the reverse side, avoiding direct pressure on hand-finished edges and seams
- After use, let the piece rest flat, loosely folded or gently rolled, away from direct sunlight and heat sources
- Do not store it tightly compressed, to protect the fabric and the hand-rolled details
With the right care, the fabric will keep its depth, and the piece will age with quiet character.

3 folds or 5 folds
3 folds - the classic Italian construction. Silk folded three times on itself: fluid drape, defined knot, soft structure. The tie you'll wear most.
5 folds - the rarer craft. Five folds, no interlining: the tie falls by the weight of silk alone. Fuller at the knot, more alive in movement. For those who seek the sartorial detail.
Both are hand-stitched in our Como atelier. Request either one by writing to us.
How to tie a tie
Four knots, from simplest to most formal: Four-in-hand, Half Windsor, Windsor, Pratt.
